25th Annual Food Bank Run

Leona’s Run in 2014 was the most successful ever! Beautiful weather didn’t hurt the cause. 162 people registered for the run. Over 3,000 pounds of food and over $2,000 was raised for the Weld Food Bank. Everything ran smoothly, although Bob, the coordinator for the food bank, had a mishap with an antelope on his scooter. Thankfully the antelope didn’t hurt him too badly.

Special thanks to Dave Hinz of Kiewit Power Constructors. Dave chose Leona’s Run to focus on for some serious fundraising activities and dragged a bunch of his coworkers to the run with him.

Walmart donated some gift certificates for prizes. Thank you! The Greeley HOG chapter also made a donation even though they had other plans for the day and didn’t make the run.

Garden City Art is the newest sponsor for Leona’s Run, a poker run to benefit the Weld Food Bank. 2014 is the 25th year for the event, which started when Leona Martens approached Willie Spaedt at A Righteous Ride and asked if he could help put on an event to benefit the food bank.

The ride takes place on the first Sunday in May. The 2013 event was attended by about 150 bikes, thanks to the great weather and generosity of bikers in the area. We don’t know what Mother Nature will bring this year, but all vehicles are welcome, so if the weather doesn’t cooperate or you don’t have a motorcycle, please plan on attending regardless of your mode of transportation.

The food bank has spectacular buying power. With every $1 donated, they can provide 6 meals! Because of that, they hope that you’ll choose to make the $20 donation to take part in the run. However, we don’t want to leave anyone out, so if a bag of non-perishable food items is better for your budget, then that works for us.

We’ll start gathering at 10:00 am, and anyone registered for the run can grab a complimentary breakfast provided by the Weld Food Bank. At 11:00, the Glory Riders chapter of the Christian Motorcyclist Association will bless the bikes. Soon after that we’ll start leaving in groups, a slight deviation from last year, so the stops won’t be as crowded. The run will end at The New Plantation where we will have cash prizes for the best hands and door prizes for everyone. If we come up with some really good items, we may even have an auction.

If you’d like to make donations for door prizes or auction items, please contact Abby at Garden City Art, Willie at A Righteous Ride or Larry at The New Plantation.
